THE POST HOUSE
Home from home in the Cairngorms
The Post House is a large self-catering holiday home in the centre of Kingussie which is ideal for groups, extended families and residential courses. It was built in 1909 for the GPO as a postal sorting office for a wide area of the Highlands, situated conveniently near the main railway line to London.
We bought this substantial property in 1995 and developed it into a family home, retaining many original features while creating a comfortable and unique space. It has been the scene of many a get together and is a perfect venue for large gatherings. Between the Main House and The Studio it can comfortably accommodate for 18 people.
The Main House has a massive 40 foot sitting room and 6 bedrooms for 14 people, plus four bathrooms. There’s a 12 foot long banqueting table, a table football and old piano, three large sofas are place around a large wood burning stove with generous supplies of logs. The large farmhouse style kitchen features another enormous dining table, wine fridge, range cooker and two fridges . The utility room has a washing machine, butler sink, freezer and plenty of space for coats and boots.
The Studio sleeps an additional 4 people and is a separate building to the rear of the property with an entrance hall/utility room that leads into a spacious living room with a kitchen and a sitting/dining area where there is wood burning stove. Upstairs are two very large bedrooms, a double and a twin, and a bathroom. It has fabulous views of the mountains through its large south facing windows.
Outside, the spacious south facing courtyard is a joy on sunny days and boasts a luxurious barrel sauna, a huge hot tub, a BBQ and an outdoor table and chairs. The huge garden is mainly laid to lawn and has a children’s play area with a wooden swingset and climbing frame, a fire pit, and a cosy greenhouse with deck chairs and a mountain view. There is also a huge decked area with seating and guests are welcome to enjoy any fruit or herbs that they find growing seasonally in the garden.
Our new addition for 2021 is a relaxation/spa/fitness room in The Bothy. A lovely, sunny room which is accessed both from the courtyard and the garden, featuring a steam/shower room, yoga mats, pilates balls, comfortable seating and a place to relax. It also leads out on the huge wrap around deck which looks over the garden, and we have recently installed a covered seating area with comfortable garden furniture so you can enjoy the outdoors even on a rainy day.
Perfectly placed in the centre of the Cairngorms National Park, it’s a brilliant base to enjoy walking, climbing, fishing, golfing, mountain biking, skiing, snow-boarding, sailing, canoeing and bird watching.
IS THE POST HOUSE SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN?
Oh yes..we love having children to visit at The Post House. We have a great playroom filled with toys, games, DVD’s, puzzles and books. There are 2 x camping cots, 2 x high chairs, a step for the bathroom and even a potty. With a stair gate a fire guard and a drawer full of plastic plates and beakers, we’ve got it covered!
Our garden is large and enclosed, with a fabulous climbing frame and swing set. We have garden games available to borrow and even sledges if you are lucky enough to get some snow!
IS THE POST HOUSE WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE?
Yes. The Post House is all on one level (except the mezzanine bedroom) and therefore accessible to wheelchairs throughout.
